On Wednesday, 11 March 2026, the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change will publish a new report, ‘Climate adaptation and mitigation in the agri-food system – Recommendations for coherent EU policies’.

Climate change is already disrupting the EU’s agri-food system, undermining its central role in Europe’s food security, rural livelihoods and strategic autonomy. Rising temperatures and more frequent and severe climate hazards, such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, pest and diseases, are affecting agricultural productivity, ecosystem services and rural livelihoods. While the agri-food system is among the most climate-exposed parts of the economy, it also accounts for around a third of EU greenhouse gas emissions, which have decreased far more slowly than those of the rest of the economy.

Drawing on the latest science, the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change presents concrete recommendations to climate-proof the agri-food system, outlining pathways for a systemic transition that strengthens climate resilience, cuts emissions, and supports wider environmental, economic and social objectives.
